Confidential Brief for George W. Bush on Climate Change

Fri Dec 02, 2005 at 11:48:55 AM PDT

This is a repost from a post of mine on Treehugger. I thought that the dKos crowd would particularly like it:

Not for the humor impaired, this confidential brief (pdf format) to US president George W. Bush is filled with childish fun. The cover claims that it is by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), but that's surely just part of the spoof.

Public Relations DISASTER for Bush is Brewing - Iraq War Photos

Mon Sep 26, 2005 at 03:50:01 PM PDT

http://www.eastbayexpress.com/Issues/2005-09-21/news/news.html

It's all there. Just read it...

Basically, a bunch of US soldiers have been trading pictures of dead Iraqis for porn; they sent the pictures to a porn webmaster in exchange for access to his site, and the guy published the photos on nowthatsfuckedup.com .

FDA to INCINERATE ~400,000 food rations donated by UK for Katrina victims

Wed Sep 21, 2005 at 11:16:05 AM PDT

You can read the whole story at Wikinews (they point to other sources):

The American Food and Drug Administration has recalled operational rations (MREs) donated by Britain to help survivors of Hurricane Katrina. The majority of the 400,000 rations donated by Britian, at a cost of millions of pounds, are set to be destroyed at a plant in Little Rock, Arkansas.

The move has infuriated aid workers who hasten to point out that "Under Nato, American soldiers are also entitled to eat such rations, yet the starving of the American South will see them go up in smoke because of FDA red tape madness."

Bush signing autographs?!??!

Mon Sep 05, 2005 at 12:53:25 PM PDT

Anybody saw it on CNN? Bush was signing autographs on kids' t-shirts and on small pieces of paper, acting like a rock star or something.

Pretty disgusting to see that his schedule is not too busy to keep him from doing that. I hope that people noticed that and that it will appear on MediaMatters and places like that at least, and make the editorial pages of big newspapers tomorrow.

US Frees 1000 Prisoners From Abu Ghraib

Sat Aug 27, 2005 at 06:46:52 PM PDT

I just heard on the news that the US has freed about 1000 people from Abu Ghraib to help the negociations with the sunnis.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the fact that they just freed A THOUSAND prisoners for purely political reasons either shows that: 1) they were held for political reasons or 2) they were held arbitrarily for no good reason.

Please help AntiWar.com - Donate generously!

Fri Aug 05, 2005 at 04:26:03 AM PDT

The best site to keep current on news about war - especially on news that governments all around the world would rather have you not know about - is AntiWar.com.

They've been around for 10 years and have covered almost all conflicts during that period, but now they need money to keep their staff and pay their bandwidth bills.

Please donate generously and keep encouraging them by visiting the site and telling family and friends about them.

Hurry up! Their pledge week ends soon and if they don't meet their objectives cuts will be made, or maybe they'll even close down.

Kyoto as a Model for Medical Innovation

Fri Feb 25, 2005 at 01:53:39 PM PDT

Worldchanging features the following very interesting proposal:

Open Access News points us towards an interesting proposal: a global Medical R&D Treaty (PDF) which obliges signatory nations to spend a certain percentage of GDP in support of core medical research, including the development of biomedical databases and tools, vaccines and drugs, and evaluations of those products.

ACLU: got files from the Army, more TORTURE

Sat Feb 19, 2005 at 12:01:29 PM PDT

Here is what the ACLU had to say about files it has obtained from the US army about cases of torture other than Abu Ghraib, and even in places other than Iraq.

Economic Hitmen - sources of many of the US' problems

Wed Feb 16, 2005 at 10:04:14 AM PDT

There's an excellent article over at Alternet about "economic hitmen" and how they meddled with Iran, Saudi Arabia, Ecuador and many other countries. It also explains how it's responsible for a lot of the reasons cited by terrorists for their acts.

A small quote from the interview under the fold, but please click on the link above and read the whole thing it's worth it.

Wikinews.org -- A step in taking back the media

Tue Feb 15, 2005 at 02:21:26 PM PDT

Most of you probably already know Wikipedia, the HUGE collaborative encyclopedia.

Well, they have many sub-projects and one of them is Wikinews, news written in a collaborative manner and with a Neutral Point of View (NPOV).

Quote of the Week about Social Security

Mon Feb 07, 2005 at 06:26:03 AM PDT

From WiiIAi:

"Like tax cuts, Social Security privatization was fundamentally about "starving the beast," circumscribing the powers of government. Connect pensions to the stock market, and any attempt to regulate pollution, raise the minimum wage, tax corporations, prevent them sending jobs oversees, etc etc etc would be denounced as threatening granny's <strike>private</strike> personal retirement account. Almost every aspect of a progressive agenda would be measured against the Dow Jones and found wanting. The R's would be practically assured of a permanent majority."

Clinton has a library -- what should Bush have?

Thu Nov 18, 2004 at 03:17:30 PM PDT

My vote goes to a military cemetary. It would make sense. After all, he is probably the president that created the most jobs in the military burial business in a while.

'The George W. Bush cemetary, where the soldiers he sent to unnecessary imperial wars are laid to rest.'

But who knows, maybe he'll actually get a street in San Francisco named after him. Heh.

U.S. Treasury Secretary - Makes sense when you're a jingoist idiot

Wed Nov 17, 2004 at 10:51:39 AM PDT

"U.S. Treasury Secretary John Snow said on Wednesday that cutting a record budget deficit was a top priority for the second-term Bush administration and challenged Europe to play its part in helping trim the U.S. trade gap by boosting their own economic growth.

The current account deficit is a shared responsibility,? Snow said in prepared remarks for delivery to the Royal Institute of International Affairs [...]"

Replacing "religious" with "faith-based"

Sun Nov 14, 2004 at 06:23:03 PM PDT

Please people, fight this hijacking of the english language.

Words have meanings and emotional charges. When you replace them with bland words, you can often more easily do effective propaganda or avoid provoking as big a reaction from the opposition.

I recently saw on CNN something about Jeb Bush opened a "faith-based" prison in Florida. I'm sorry, but that's a religious prison, and there's a thing in the constitution about separation of church & state. Look into it, Mr. Governor.

Progressives of America, encourage what's left

Sat Nov 13, 2004 at 08:49:04 AM PDT

There are very few decent media publications left in the US. I suggest that you encourage them by reading, talking about them with your friends and family and especially, by subscribing (most have really low prices and lose money on subscriptions, it's donors that keep them alive). The three I recommend have some of our best thinkers writing for them and they are very insightful about what is going on. This is as much a battle of ideas as anything, so stay informed.

I suggest:

Fallujah is a distraction from post-election scandals

Wed Nov 10, 2004 at 01:13:07 PM PDT

What a surprise that this major military operation happened right after the election.

It shows, first, that US politics have a pretty big impact on the war (not doing what is best on the ground but what is best for politicians overseas); they were afraid to suffer too many casualties before the election.

Second: How convenient that all the media coverage is now over there in Iraq (where it also belongs, don't get me wrong) and that all the post-election madness and "problems" (fraud) are getting glanced over.

2 things you should do *RIGHT NOW* to help

Sun Nov 07, 2004 at 12:55:18 PM PDT

Donate some money to ACLU and to the NRDC. You can't count on the govovernment to defend either your civil liberties or the environment anymore, so help the people who are trying to do it.

ACLU.org

NRDC.org

Please be generous the way you've been during the election. Civil society has a big role to play in how a country works, lets take that back from the fanatics.

With Bush back in power, a LOT of traffic needs to go there

Fri Nov 05, 2004 at 09:12:52 AM PDT

https://www.nrdc.org/joinGive/join/basic.asp

If the government of the USA is not going to protect our environment anymore, then it's going to have to be groups like the excellent NRDC that will have to do it. Please consider joining, even if only with the lowest amount of donation (more if you can afford it). It's crucial.
