Donald Trump’s much-discussed appeal to white working class voters may not be all it's cracked up to be, but the Ohio AFL-CIO isn’t taking any chances, anyway. The labor federation is getting an early start on reminding its members just what Trump really stands for, with a series of fliers calling out his abuses of workers. One of the fliers reads:
Donald Trump: Dangerous. Divisive. Unfit to be president.
- Used undocumented labor and took advantage of workers. Trump used undocumented Polish workers, with his contractor paying them well below the union rate and threatening them with deportation when they complained.
- Workers labored around the clock, slept on-site and were exposed to asbestos. Workers at Trump Tower worked as many as 18 hours a day, sometimes sleeping on-site, and were exposed to asbestos without proper equipment.
- Regularly paid contractors cents on the dollar. In Atlantic City, contractors who worked on Trump properties were regularly paid significantly less than was agreed to in contracts.
Ohio union members may also see fliers hitting Trump for outsourcing and for being “an insult to working women.” The AFL-CIO represents around 500,000 workers in Ohio. These messages, tailored to the concerns of workers and union members and coming from an already trusted source, have the potential to shape some people’s views of Trump in this crucial swing state at the beginning of the general election season.
